Question Greetings,
My father was stationed in Iceland during the Korean War before he was
married to my mother. He had a relationship with a woman there and
together they produced a child that he never met. The woman sent a letter to
my dad, a letter I never read. All I know it that her name is "Vickie or Vicky or
Vicki". My dad's name was Harold Kehoe. I believe he was stationed at
Keflavik. I would love to get in touch with this woman who is my half sister
and let her know that our father has passed away. Thank you,
Michael Kehoe
Answer Dear Michael,
I would suggest that you get in touch with the Icelandic National Registry (Email: thjodskra@thjodskra.is, telephone number: 00354 569 2950).
This is a register of all those who have been domiciled in Iceland since 1952.
You could also contact the local newspaper, Víkurfréttir about putting an announcement in (email: pket@vf.is, telephone: 00354 421 0000).
Do you know whether the woman was Icelandic, or somebody stationed with the armed forces?
If she was Icelandic, do you think Vickie/Vicky/Vicki could have been an anglicized version of her name?
There is an Icelandic girls name which is Vigdís.
I don't know whether you know anything about the Icelandic language, but if you are searching on the Internet it will be helpful to know that names decline (change) according to the grammar of the sentence). For example, the name "Anna" changes to "Önnu" when it is preceded by a word like 'to'. So Vigdís could also be Vigdísi or Vigdísar.
Keflavík is now in the municipality called Reykjanesbær. Keflavík has a population of about 10,000.
