Question
Laine, my wife and I would like to come to the northwest but are unfamiliar with the region.  I know you are an expert on Idaho and that's cretainly a possiblity but if you could recommend a state forest/small resort with cabins on the water or nearby it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.  Lance

Answer
Hello Lance,
I cannot answer for all of the Northwest, but I know there are many places that meet your criteria in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The first that comes to mind is in McCall, Idaho, which is about 100 miles north of Boise, the state capitol.  It is a beautiful drive along the Payette River.
  Here is the website:

In Northern Idaho, there are several areas in Sandpoint that would meet this criteria.  The closest airport would be in Spokane Washington.
Here's the website of the Bottle Bay Resort:

Here's another website for accomodations in the Sandpoint, Lake Pend Oreille region:

There are also some state parks in Idaho with cabins.  Farragut comes to mind, and here is the website where you can check out Farragut and others in Idaho.

We have also been to Wallowa Lake State Park in Oregon with our RV, but they do have a cabin and a few Yurts.
Here's their website, and from there you can check out other Oregon State Parks.

I'm sorry that I don't have any personal knowledge of Washington state parks, but  you can't go wrong with any of these states for beautiful scenery, and wonderful alpine lakes.   If you like the coast, the Oregon Coast is breathtaking, and the islands off of the coast of Washington........Seattle area, are also wonderful.  You take a ferry from the Seattle area.

I hope you and your wife have a wonderful visit.  If there is anything else more particular I can tell you, I'd be glad to try.

Expertise

We lived in Idaho for many years, and traveled extensively while there and whenever we have a chance now. We love Idaho, it`s cities and mountains. It truly is a place that IS what America WAS. I can help with information on campgrounds, RV Parks, and particularly the SW area of the State, as we lived in Boise, and also in the mountains north of Boise, although we have been to all areas of Idaho.

Experience

I was an "expert" on AllExperts.com since the beginning, and even before the wonderful Sue Meacham became an expert. I was asked to do that by the founding father of AllExperts.com, and before About.com took over.
