About Trey Tarrant
Expertise
I can answer questions about plant identification, plant care, plant pest management, landscaping, and general gardening questions. Please post a picture of the plant you wish to identify, if possible. If you say something like, "I've got this plant and it's green with long leaves and white flowers" and do not include a picture, chances are I won't be able to help you. I may not be able to help with plants that are not grown in the Southeast/ Eastern US, but you're welcome to try me.

Identifying Unknown Plants - Plants + coffee

Expert: Trey Tarrant - 1/17/2009

Question
Hi,
For a science fair project, I decided to see the affects on plants watered with coffee compared to water. I watered parsley and Sweet Marjoram. The Parsley watered with coffee grew very tall, but nothing else grew. What is in coffee that made the parsley grow so tall (nutrients, vitamins, etc.)? Thank you

Answer
The coffee bean is a seed, and so it must contain every nutrient that a plant needs to live, which includes 14-17 elements, depending on who you ask.  Certainly, when you make coffee, many of these elements end up in the brew, which would account for the increased growth of the Parsely.  I don't know why the other plants didn't respond to the coffee.
