About Trey Tarrant
Expertise
I can answer questions about plant identification, plant care, plant pest management, landscaping, and general gardening questions. Please post a picture of the plant you wish to identify, if possible. If you say something like, "I've got this plant and it's green with long leaves and white flowers" and do not include a picture, chances are I won't be able to help you. I may not be able to help with plants that are not grown in the Southeast/ Eastern US, but you're welcome to try me.

Identifying Unknown Plants - Wild Flower/Bulb

Expert: Trey Tarrant - 1/15/2009

Question
I live in the Cote d'Azur South France. I saw these flowers in a group, next to a stone wall under pine trees on a rocky mountain side. The flower stem is approx 6 ins high, fleshy leaves and the long pearl like stamen (?) protrudes past the hooded deep purple flower. Are they orchides or Bulbs and the name...please!

Answer
I don't know the specific species, but I can tell you that the plant is a member of the family Araceae, whose members are called "Arums".  See the Wikipedia link below.

Sorry I can't be more specific than that.

Trey
