About Trey Tarrant
Expertise
I can answer questions about plant identification, plant care, plant pest management, landscaping, and general gardening questions. Please post a picture of the plant you wish to identify, if possible. If you say something like, "I've got this plant and it's green with long leaves and white flowers" and do not include a picture, chances are I won't be able to help you. I may not be able to help with plants that are not grown in the Southeast/ Eastern US, but you're welcome to try me.

Identifying Unknown Plants - What plant? woody, black berries, kind of grows like a vine

Expert: Trey Tarrant - 3/31/2009

Question
Help! Evergreen - didnt drop leaves in fall or winter, has clusters of black
berries...

Answer
That is eniglish ivy, Hedera helix.  The picture you sent is of the adult folliage.  English ivy grows like a vine until it is up in a tree or something and then grows horizontally, changes its leaf shape, and makes flowers and fruit.  One can make a cutting of this adult growth, and, if planted in the ground, it will continue to grow like a shrub rather than a vine.
