Answer The U.S. has 50 states. 48 are in the contiguous U.S., Alaska is "separated" by a slice of Canada and Hawaii is a chain of islands off the coast of the state of California. Illinois, the state where I live, is in the central part of the country -- our region is known as the Midwest.
