Immigration Issues/Driving Without License = Deportation?

Question
Hi, my friend has been issued a misdemeanor, driving without license in California. He has to go to the court next month. What are the possible things that could happen? What are the possible consequences? Will he get deported because he's an illegal immigrant and drove without a license?

Answer
Hello:

Your friend's arrest could come to the attention of the Department of Homeland Security. The misdemeanor per se is not sufficient basis for removal, but the fact that your friend has no lawful status could trigger proceedings.
