I am on F1 visa since 2008. I have my associates in nursing and a license of RN from texas. Now i am trying to go for my RN-BSN program. I want to know what visa category either CPT/OPT or any other would qualify me to work at least 20 hours in a hospital setting so that i could start building up my experience.
Also, regarding my F1 visa, it expires on december 2012, am i obligated to visit my homecountry India to get a visa stamp for extending my student visa? or can i apply for extension before the expiration date and continue my education herein USA without leaving the country until i graduate from a bachelors program and file for my OPT?
Answer OPT - Optional Practical Training - allows to work full time for one year after completion/graduation; CPT - Curricular Practical Training - allows to work for up-to 20 hours/week in a field related to the major, while engaging in studies. If you h ave received 12 months or more of full time CPT while studying, you are not eligible for OPT. Time spent in CPT also is deducted from the 12-month maximum.
So - OPT = full time after completion/graduation, and CPT = 20hours/week while studying.
You may need stamping if you intend to travel outside US.
