Immigration Issues/social security update

Question
Good day

Came across your site while searching for immigration questions. Had the following question:

If a naturalized US citizen was unaware that he or she had to update their social security number to citizen status and have lived for almost 10 years in the United States, what should he or she do and what are the consequences.
What happens if one's social security number is not updated to citizen status?

Regards,
Sam

Answer
Hi,

The social security number assigned to an individual remains the same irrespective of immigration status. Thus, even if your current social security card states that it is valid with employment authorization only, it remains valid. You can contact a nearby social security office to update the card, but it is not mandatory. There is no negative consequence for lack of any action in updating the card.
