Immigration Issues/Extention expired green card

Question
Dear Sir,

I am a green card holder (10 years) but currently living&working abroad. My card expired July 2003 and I did not have an opportunity to apply for an extention. I am now planning to return to the US for a vacation and possible future resettlement in the US. Please advise as what I should do to retain an extention/new green card.
Kind regards,
Jane Doe

Answer
If you have stayed abroad for more than a year at a time, you have abandoned your residence and are no longer a permanent resident. If not, you can go into the U.S. Embassy and get a "letter of transportation" to the U.S. and then when you get here you can renew your card.

Regards,

Robert
