Immigration Issues/Machine Readable Green Card required?

Question
I just returned from a business trip, and the Immigration Officer told my that my Green Card, which was issued in 1983, had to be replaced with a "machine readable" version by January 7th 2007. I thought the "machine readable"  requirement was for passports only. Is there a similar requirement for Green Cards?  I like my old card becasue it never expires! Thanks!

Answer
It is not the machine readable issue it is the fact that Immigration wants all people with green cards that have no expiration to renew tham and get the ones with expiration dates on them so they can charge you a fee every 10 years to renew. Alternatively, you can apply to be a U.S. citizen and then you do not have to renew your card, but the filing fee is 400.
