Question
How much time can an immigrant with a green card spend outside the U.S., without jeapordizing his/her status or causing a set-back to his/her plans for applying for U.S. citizenship?

Answer
Just to keep the green card you can not make a trip of more than a year without applying for a reentry permit that allows you to go out for 2 years.

For citizenship purposes, you can not make a trip over 1 year period and if you do you have to come back and start the 5 year continuous physical presence with no trips over a year. Any trip over 6 months but less than a year will be scrutinized by Immigration.
