Expert: Ian Date: 6/14/2008 Subject: HIV from CT Scanner
Question Dear Ian,
I was fixing a CT Scanner with one of my colleague and after we finished I noticed that I scratched my hand during the work -there was no active bleeding though but the skin was broken and little tiny blood was visible after 20-30 minutes-, and I noticed that he had the same.
If he is HIV positive, what are the chances of HIV transmission if he scratched his hand on a rough edge inside the scanner then I scratched my hand on the same spot?
Your help is highly appreciated.
Answer Hi
Thanks for the question - interesting, I haven't heard of this before (involving a CT scanner....).
Anyway, whilst of course HIV is carries in blood, in the situation you describe, there isn't enough fresh (so not dried) blood getting deep enough into your body....
Hope this helps - and for more information about HIV, I recommend this website: www.avert.org
