AboutMarkus Johnson Expertise I can answer questions on how to improve writing in the forms of fiction or poetry.
Experience I am a teenager with a suprising knack for the English language and creative writing. Every year, since the 4th grade, I have attempted to write a book, which was always seen by those who read it to be enjoyable and creative. I have discovered I also am talented at writing poetry, and my English teachers have all said that they enjoyed my writing.
Education/Credentials I have been in AAP english classes for all of my school years, and, recently, I took the PSAT and recieved a score of 63 in both Writing Skills and Verbal, which would translate into, on the SAT, 630 points. This score was taken out of 80 possible points, meaning that I was only 17 away from a perfect score.
Question i am suffering from a severe writers block. i have had a few blocks before, which might have lasted for about a few weeks or so. this one however, seems to have stuck. a few months ago, we had an essay to write for a test which normally i would have done very well at. well , i did'nt. when i re read it, i couldnt believe it was my doing. it was terrible. and i kept on struggling through out it. i wanted to grab at good words, but my mind was blank. i was out of ideas. i have been reading a lot, like always. i sit down , and with delibration put pen to paper, hoping that any minute now an inspiration will strike me like a bolt of lightning. i am so depressed now. there are times when i feel like relinquishing it all, thats it, the age of eloquence has passed me.but i still want to be a good writer. ok now the big problem is that we have got this essay to write, the title is,"God created man,He then rested. Then god created woman and nither him nor the man have rested since." fun topic right/ except that i have absolutely no idea what to write on it. its supposed to be on the battle of the sexes , i guess . that is all i know. please give me a few tips on shifting my writers block and how to write this essay. please and thankyou.
Answer Sara,
Oh, writers block is the most annoying thing, isn't it? Well, seeing as this is a homework assignment, I can't in good conscience start the story off for you, but I can help you get back on track.
Anyway, the best way I have found , for me, to fix writers block is to just sit down with the pen and paper and to start writing, not thinking about what you're writing so hard. Just letting your writing hand go with the flow that your mind is telling it to. Everything you want to write is up there... it's just a matter of getting to it. And the best way to get to it? To just relax and write.
Another way is to read more about the subject you are writing. Also, you could try opening up to the other things you could be writing about. Maybe your teacher would like a story about how women can eat away at men until they are at the breaking point, or maybe about how women are generally a bit more faithful than men and how all the prayers from women aren't letting God take a break. Or, maybe you teacher wants to hear about how Eve gave Adam the apple, which, in the Bible, threw humanity into despair and made Adam have to work and God have to look after humans more closely.
Finally, you could try to sleep a little right before you write. Sleeping will help make your mind less muddled, making your thoughts more clear, therefore making it easier to write. Basically: trying to write in the dead of night would be a bad idea, maybe on a Saturday morning or after a nap would be a good idea.
If you need any more help, please don't hesitate to write again!
