Question Hello,
I've been writing since fifth grade and I'm alright with grammar and suspense and making my writing sound good, and I can also keep an existing character in character (in fanfiction and such), but I cannot create my own for some reason! Whoever I create always ends up acting just like me or characters from my favorite stories! Even when I give them a really detailed personality, it seems I always forget something here or there and replace that detail with one from my own life and my own personality instead. Do you have any good tips on creating characters that I can really care about and whose heads both I and the reader can get into?
Thank you!
PS: I'm a ninth grade student
Answer Dear Molly:
You are doing great, although it may not seem like it. You almost can NEVER create a character unless you can relate to him/her. They have to be somewhat like you, a friend, a character you love, or someone you either love or hate, something that you can relate to. That is the KEY to creating a believable character that your readers will absolutely fall in love with: you have to relate to your protagonist. Put all of your emotion into your main character, and pour out your heart into every story you write. That way, the story will be pure truth, and the reader will be able to acquire a connection with your characters easily.
You are doing great, molly. Keep writing, and just write what you feel. That is the best way to write. Happy writing.
