Question
It was a huge decision for me to go school to personal training school, got my certificate but my confidence and self esteem is that I'm just not good enough, even when I others have said I was great or have faith in me. I'm always very hard on myself. I have not done much with this personal training stuff cause I'm scared and and I feel like such a failure. Everyday that I don't do anything with this it just eats at me more. I feel so lost and alone, like the happy person I use to be is gone and I don't know how to find myself. How can I train others and motivate them when I can't do it for myself. I need to learn how to be kind to myself but I don't know how.

Answer
Hi Dee,

Well done for completing your certificate. Obviously the testers felt that you know your stuff and have qualified enough to be given the certificate.

I would suggest that you are scared and lack confidence and motivation to do anything with the personal training for a couple of possible reasons:

1. You don't know what to do next.
2. You are a beginner without experience.

The first problem needs a goal and a plan. Consider what you want to do with these new skills. Do you need training in another area? Perhaps you have a block with an aspect of getting a job as a trainer? Check out my website www.becandolifecoaching.com for information about setting goals and getting into action. You will also find information about motivation and confidence on there to help.

Once you have a goal you can start taking little steps towards what you want to achieve. For example, if you want to be a freelance trainer you may need some help marketing or setting yourself up in business. The issue is not to see the huge work involved with getting to your final goal but focussing on the little steps that take you nearer. That is a lot less daunting and easier to manage. Take a step and then work out what to do next.

Something that may also help would be finding someone else who is an active working trainer and asking them to act as a mentor with you for a few months. If this is difficult due to competition why not buy a couple of sessions to reassure yourself of your own ability.

The second issue will only be resolved once you start working. Of course you are scared as a beginner! Time and experience will make things get easier. Work with your fear knowing it is only natural and the only way to get over it is to start working.

Finally, everyone needs help and motivation from time to time, this does not make you a failure; just a normal human being! You may have become a trainer as you recognised this need in others - why shouldn't you need the services of someone else sometimes too, bearing in mind the help you need is different to the service you provide anyway?

I hope that helps,

Jacky
