Question
I am 22 i am a qualified tradesmen. Lately i have been doing my own jobs but when i get given jobs my heart rate increase, i automatically think about how the job can go wrong and i cant sleep because i go over the job in my head all night and i start to stress out. This is my career and i don't know how long i can keep feeling like this. Please point me in the right direction to fix this.

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the world of total responsibility in self employment!

What you are going through is basically a stretch in your comfort zone and is perfectly normal. As you do more work your confidence will increase as your experience and skills increase.

To minimise these feelings you can do several things.

1. Reduce the risk to your customers by ensuring you have adequate insurance. You can then relax a little as if something does go wrong you are covered.

2. Think about all the jobs you have completed satisfactorily.

3. During the day or the night before doing a job sit down and proactively work through all the risks and potential problems that could occur. Right down what you will do to avoid or prevent them. If you need to do something to put your plans in place, then do it.

4. Remember the 4 P's (Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance). Plan, plan and plan again until you are all planned out.

5. If you have done everything you possibly can to prevent problems occurring you can tell yourself that there is nothing left to do and just let go of the work until the next day. Visualise yourself putting the job away in a box ready for the next day. If you believe in God or an equivalent you can mentally hand it over.

6. To avoid the culprits that encourage insomnia avoid caffeine late at night. Don't drink too much alcohol. Take some exercise, even if it is a brisk walk (not too late) and eat your evening meal at a sensible time.

7. If you do wake and cannot sleep, try reading or doing something that will take your mind off the problem.

Before you know it you will be able to look back on this and wonder what you were worrying about. Until then work with it, stick to your guns and you will be OK.
