Subject: Narmada River

Question
I recently purchased a Shiva Lingam Stone.  In my research on this "sacred stone", I have learned that the river the Shiva Lingams are found is in process of having many dams built.  This is apparently a very controversial issue.  Why?

Answer
Hello Ms. Kern,

I am happy to hear about your interest in the Shiva Lingam stones.  I will attempt to answer your question about the controversy surronding the dams.

The river you referred to is the Narmada River.  The government of India is undertaking a huge project to build over 3,000 dams all along the river.  There has been staunch support for and against the building of the dam network in the region.

The opposition to the construction of the dams has been very vocal.  As you may know already, the building of dams cause a change in the ecosystem in the surrounding areas.  There are also many villages that would need to be relocated.  These villages total about 200,000 people.  Understandably, many people would not be happy leaving their homes.

The supporters, on the other hand, are also very vocal.  They argue that the project will play an important part for the greater good for millions of people.  Food production will be more efficient, electricity will be more available, and the economy will get a much needed jump start.

I have found a very informative article that may help you understand this problem further.
