You seem to be the expert on this! I am trying to trace my family roots from Jamaica to India. The surname we have is Singhdas however I suspect that this name does not exist! I think that its two names that have been brought together Singh and Das. Does that make sense? Do you think you could give me an idea of regions where this name is popular? My great grandfather came to Jamaica as an indetured worker so perhaps the name has changed over time.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Answer Dear Kamika,
The name singhdas seems to be combination of Singh and Das. Singh is a very common surname from Northern India, (from whole of 'COWBELT', which comprises of punjab, haryana, rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar) but the surname 'DAS' is more common in Eastern Indian State.
Now, This combination of name suggest that may be your ancestor came from Indian state of Bihar, which have the community from both Singh and Das lineage, this is just a suggestion..
