Question -
my mother had the surname Allahar and was originally from india, is it a Sikh name?
Answer -
Dear Gillian
I have never come across this surname. I am sorry.

P.S: It is possible that many Indians who migrated to parts of Carribean and Fiji Islands in the Eighteenth century might have used these surname.
follow up question - might it derived from another name? i have done an extensive net search and have seen it in some sites relating to Indian history.
Answer Dear Mr. Gillian,
Let me start by giving a brief introduction about sikh surnames and how they come into use.
Many Sikh surnames are/were the name of the village that they originally come from. The most famous example will be of Sant Harchand singh Longoval and Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, both of these personality took their surnames after the village that they came from. Many Villages like the one I come from does not exist anymore, and moreover my village was a very small one. And so its a bit difficult to find people with same surname like me a bit difficult (Though not impossible).
So if you understand, maybe the surname of your mother was the name of her village and also it is possible that the surname 'Allahar' is actually derived from some other surname.
If you could give me some more information than maybe i could help. Informations like when she or her family migrated from India would help or tell me what sikh she is?. I mean Jat Sikh, Khatri, Rajput etc etc.
Try to pass on this information, it might help me in getting more information.
Bye,, Sukhjender
