Question
Hi

First, I thank you for the answers that you have posted to questions on passport issues. I've a problem with my passport and there are different answers posted in different sites on net. I would be grateful to you if you could resolve the following confusion of mine.

I'm an undergrad student. My name in all my study certificates is listed as NNNNNN SSSSSSS. (NN.. is the given name and SSSS...is the surname, though the certificates dont make any distinction). However in my passport the 'surname' column is blank and in the 'given name' column NNNNN SSSSS is printed. I hold this passport for past 14 months.

Now I've an admit for graduate studies from a reputed university in USA and I intend to join in August. I've only two months time to apply and get VISA.

Do i need to get the passport corrected? If so what procedures should i follow and how much time does it take?

(It was my mistake to fill the form wrongly--I didn't read the instructions pertaining to filling the name column properly.)

Answer
Hello Nishu,

Thanks for the compliment.

It is preferable that you get the name corrected in the Passport as the immigration authorities of US are very meticulous and particular with the name and identity of the passport holder.

In my opinion, the only way to get the surname name corrected is to file a fresh application in Tatkal in consultation with the Regional Passport Officer and with proof that the surname name has been inadvertently written in the original Passport application form at the time of filing it.

The issue of verification and other formalities may be dropped at the instance of the RPO and you may get the passport at the earliest and you will be able to proceed with the US Visa formalities.

I hope this suffice your query

All the best
