Question Do small size companies that intend to convert from outsourcing production of goods, to inhouse production of goods, utilize industrial engineers? May these small companies be as few as 10 current employees, that will need to hire additional production employees? In other words, size of the employer is not relevant?
Thank you for your time, effort and services.
Answer Hello Larry, and thanks for your question. If you are going to be doing more work in-house, it would make sense that you are probably going to need more employees. Whether or not you are going to need an industrial engineer would depend upon your management's expertise in work measurement, production control, and staffing. In other words, is management knowledgable in quantifying the new workload, deciding how many additional staff will be needed, establishing cost standards, etc.. ? If management has little experience in these areas, the services of an experienced industrial engineer would not just be advisable, but critical to the success of the conversion. If you believe that these services would only be needed during the conversion and not on an on-going basis there after, you should consider hiring a consultant to perform the needed services.
