Infertility/Fertility - Delayed/late ovulation

Expert: Edward Joseph Ramirez, MD, FACOG - 9/30/2008

Question
Hello.  I have been trying to conceive for 2 cycles, and I had come off the birth control pill about 3 months ago (just before actively trying to conceive).  I have been charting my temperature, and ovulation has taken place on day 23 of the first cycle, and day 24 of the second cycle, with my period coming 11 to 13 days after ovulation.  This means that my cycles have lasted 34 to 37 days.  The follicular phase--before ovulation--of 23 or 24 days seems awfully long.  Could this indicate a hormonal imbalance or other fertility issue?

Answer
Hello Carlie,

The simple answer to your question is yes.  Your cycles are longer than usual and may be affecting the process required to become pregnant.  However, before you go running to your doc to have an evaluation done, you should keep trying for a little while longer.  The average woman takes 12 months to get pregnant, so it may happen on its own down the road.  Just keep trying for now.

Sincerely,

Edward J. Ramirez, M.D., FACOG
