Infertility/Fertility - Can you take Clomid for more...

Expert: Rebecca Carte - 5/1/2006

Question
Can you take Clomid for more than 5 days per cycle? I started last month and am about to start month 2.  I have had a fertility check up including HSG and I always Ovulate every month but have been trying for over a year now.  I am 33 years old and concerned about my age and chances of pregnancy.  I was wondering if I should take Clomid on days 3-9?  Last month I took them on days 5-9.  What would be best I want to give myself the best chance possible.
Thank you

Answer
In some cases, if your doctor prescribes it that way, you can take Clomid more than 5 days per cycle.  Some (including myself) have had to take it for 7 days per cycle.  It's an adjustable medication.  Some take 50mg, some take 100mg, some take more.  It all depends upon your test results and what your doctor deems necessary.  The days that you take it during your cycle also vary dependent upon when your doctor feels you have the best chance of maturing follicles.  If you've been ovulating, yet having trouble conceiving over a year, your doctor may decide to adjust your dosage of Clomid, or add an injectible fertility medication along with the Clomid.  That's what it took for me.

I can't say which days of your cycle would be best for you.  That's between you and your physician and dependent upon your ultrasound results measuring your follicular changes.
