About Polly McDonald
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding infertility due to various endocrinological disorders (thyroid, PCOS, diabetes), and can assist with charting, temping, and menstrual cycle issues. I can help with questions regarding Clomid, progesterone, as well as Metformin and Synthroid.

Experience
I have been trying to conceive my first child for two years. I am battling infertility due to an extremely severe case of hypothyroidism that I am trying to bring under control. I have been the administrator of a very large infertility/fertility message board (7,000+ members) for a year, and have just begun, along with my friend Holly, our own website for conception and infertility called MyLittleBean.com. Both of us have multiple endocrinological issues (hypothyroidism, PCOS) and are dedicated to helping others wade through the correct information with friendship and support.

Subject: Clomid and M/C?

Question
I have been checking out many different message boards lately as I have recently been put on Clomid due to anovulation.  I am concerned with, what seems to me, to be a corilation between taking Clomid and miscarriage.  It seems every post I see has a woman in it saying that after using Clomid she conceived, but lost the baby at 7 weeks (7 weeks on average).  Are the m/c's due to the Clomid?  How can a m/c be prevented?  I was told by my ob/gyn to take a HPT after I take my 12 days of Provera and before I take my Clomid 50 mg cycle day 3-7.  (I am also on glucophage due to suspected pcos.)  If I were to get pregnant, wouldn't it be too early to take a HPT in the 3 day window between taking the Provera and Clomid?  If so then I would end up taking the Clomid due to a negative HPT and possibly miscarry right?  What should I do?  Any Advice?  Sorry so long and complicated.  Thank you:)

Answer
Hi Stefanie!

First of all, I'd like to apologize for getting back with you so late.  Unfortunately, I was unable to access this site after the weekend. I continually received a server error.  AllExperts.com assured me the problem was fixed so here I am!

Let me assure you that taking Clomid to get pregnant will not cause you to miscarry afterward.  Now, that said, you do not want to take Clomid WHILE you are pregnant.  This is why your OB/GYN wants you to take an HPT before going on to your next cycle of Clomid--she wants to make sure you aren't pregnant.

Clomid and glucophage work very well together to make a pregnancy possible due to the hormonal balancing act they cause.  I hope you see great things from that combination! :-)

You can take an HPT as early as the first day of a missed period--that will be the most accurate time for detection of pregnancy.  Try not to do it any earlier (even with the new "early" tests) as they are not foolproof and have been known to give false results.  When you are on a Clomid regimen you don't want to risk that.

Again, I am sorry to have to get back to you this late, but I didn't want to just leave you hanging, either! :-)  I hope that I helped you, and I wish you all the best with TTC!
