Infertility/Fertility - Early Pregnancy

Expert: Rebecca Carte - 6/7/2006

Question
My LMP was May 10th - 16th. I spotted a brownish color for about 3 days last week and now I have a mild cramp with a very faint pink discharge today. Is it possible that I am pregnant and when should I test.

Answer
Hi Kyla:

At this point, anything is possible.  You can take some home tests as soon as the first missed day of your period.  I always recommend the beta hCG (blood draw) for accuracy, especially early on because that's when most false results would occur in home tests.

Brownish spotting is old blood excreting from your body.  It's very common and the hormone changes as you enter your next cycle or even with a pregnancy could bring that on.  The cramping/pink discharge could mean the same (either one) so there's no way of telling until you take a test of some sort.  I wish you the very best.

~Rebecca
