About Wendy Zwickl Expertise I can answer questions pertaining to infertility including how to administer the injections for IVF, common side effects one may experience, and what to expect during egg retrival. I can answer some questions on IUI and Clomid cycles. I have had unexplained infertility for 6 years and I have been through numerous Clomid cycles with and without IUI. I have been through a fresh IVF and a frozen ET. I have been through a full range of infertility testing at least once, and in many cases, numerous times. I have had to travel to do all this, and I have some helpful information for couples on how to accomplish treatment goals outside of your local area.
Experience I have dealt with almost all aspects of infertility for 6 years.
I have had IVF, FET, IUI, and Clomid cycles. I have been pregnant
once and have had one miscarrieage. I have had almost all
of the standard infertility workup tests, as has my husband.
I have done several injectible cycles, with both European and American
medications and supplies. When problems arose during treatment, I have
performed exhaustive searches on the web only to come up empty-handed.
I eventually found what I needed and felt I should pass along
whatever I could.
Expert: Wendy Zwickl Date: 4/22/2005 Subject: PCOS, Provera, and Glucophage
Question I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks in November '04. Since then my cycles have been irregular and I have been gaining weight. My doc diagnosed me with PCOS. He put me on Provera to start my period and glucophage 3x/day (1500 mg total). I have taken two 7 day courses of Provera and have been on the glocophage for a month now, and no period. He wants to test my progesterone level on day 21 once my period starts to see if I am ovulating or not but as of yet, no period. Then he wants to start me on Clomid. What do you think is the next step in getting my period to start? Or do I need to wait longer. It's been a week since my last dose of Provera. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Answer Denise-
You are not taking the Provera in an injection? I have seen Provera take up to 60 days to start a period. But according to 'official' protocol guidelines, it should only take 2 weeks. Even one source I found on the internet indicated 8 days as the average time. I think with such disparity, some clarification is overdue. It always makes me a little nervous when the PDR, the doctor, and the internet do not agree. I would call your doctor and voice your concerns. Perhaps he can clarify HIS/HER thinking on a time frame for your particular protocol. The field of RE is constantly in flux...this is a good thing normally, but very frustrating to try to give advice to someone since the advice (like dosages and methods of delivery) can be outdated in a short amount of time.
Like I said, I have seen it take 60 days, but it SHOULDN'T take that long. I didn't see how much Provera you were taking in your question, and do you have a previous history of PCOS prior to the M/C? And how old are you? Those do factor in.
Fell free to respond to my questions, but if you call your doctor and are satisfied with his/her answers, that is great too. Good luck. I know how it feels. I only had a GP in the town I am in, before I sought out an RE, and he frequently let me go WEEKS with no period, no treatment...just wait it out he said. So I do sympathize!
Wish I could tell you something better...I will hunt around some more, too, and see if I can't find more info...in case you send me your dosage/age info.
