Infertility/Fertility - Provera and Clomid

Question
Hello:

My name is Nadia.  Thank you for taking the time to help me with my issue.  I have had irregular periods since my daughter was born almost 7 years ago.  I have had three natural pregnancies since then, all resulting in miscarriage.  I am trying to get pregnant now, but I don't always get my period.  My LMP was March 23, and I have not had a period as of yet.  I took several HPT and am not pregnant.  I went to my OB/GYN today and she prescribed me Provera and Clomid.  She told me to take the Provera for 10 days.  She said even if I get my period on day 3, to still take the full 10 days.  Then she said to take the Clomid as soon as I finish with the Provera.  Does that sound right?  When do I have intercourse then?  I've been reading other articles about Clomid and they say to take it on days 3-7 or 5-9 of your period, but if I get my period after only a few days of Provera and take the Clomid after 10 full days of Provera, would I be having intercourse at the time of ovulation.  Sorry if this is confusing, I'm confusing myself now!!!

Answer
Nadia, this prescribed combination of Provera & Clomid are exactly on track!

Even if you begin a period on day 3 of Provera, that leaves 7 more days of Provera.  Then the Clomid begins to develop eggs.  This brings you around day 12 of your cycle and as you are taking the Clomid, the eggs/follicles are maturing and getting ready for ovulation.  This is perfect timing!

Intercourse is recommended all around day 14 of your cycle.  If you wanted to start on Day 12, that's probably wise.  You want sperm count to build so you don't want to do it endlessly.  Intercourse on day 12 would be good.  Then again on day 14.  Maybe again on day 15 or 16 depending upon how well everyone is feeling.  That gives a suitable presence of sperm all around when ovulation does occur.

Reading up on the signs of ovulation (cervical mucus changes, twinges around the ovaries) helps you to realize when ovulation is occuring.  I would plan to have intercourse at least 3 times between days 12 and 16 just to maximize your chances.  Remember, even if this cycle doesn't work, do not give up.  It took me 5 cycles of Clomid to achieve results!

Good luck,
Rebecca
