About Polly McDonald
Expertise
I can answer questions regarding infertility due to various endocrinological disorders (thyroid, PCOS, diabetes), and can assist with charting, temping, and menstrual cycle issues. I can help with questions regarding Clomid, progesterone, as well as Metformin and Synthroid.

Experience
I have been trying to conceive my first child for two years. I am battling infertility due to an extremely severe case of hypothyroidism that I am trying to bring under control. I have been the administrator of a very large infertility/fertility message board (7,000+ members) for a year, and have just begun, along with my friend Holly, our own website for conception and infertility called MyLittleBean.com. Both of us have multiple endocrinological issues (hypothyroidism, PCOS) and are dedicated to helping others wade through the correct information with friendship and support.

Infertility/Fertility - Provera and Clomid

Expert: Polly McDonald - 10/20/2004

Question
Hi Polly:)  I have another question that has come up.  I am on Provera and I started spotting on the 11th day (of 12) of taking it.  I started bleeding really hard 2 days after I stopped taking it.  I am now on day 5 of af and will start taking Clomid for the first time ever tonight.  My question is... Could it be possible for me to be pregnant and still be bleeding this hard, or would it be safe to assume that I am not preg. and can start the Clomid without having to spend money I don't really have on a preg. test?  Also... when would be the best time to BD?  And, how long is the average cycle for someone who is on Provera, Clomid, and Glucophage?  Thank you for your help, again!

Answer
Hi Stefanie!

My guess would be that you are not pregnant.  I think you can start on the Clomid with no problem.

Average cycles are really hard to guess, because Clomid sometimes does two things:  it can make you ovulate early and it can make your luteal phase last longer.  Unfortunately, you'll have to chart for a few months and get an average (I recommend that anyway--it's good to know your body).  As far as BD'ing, I'd get an OPK and start using them around CD 10.  Keep using them until you get two days' worth of dark (as dark as the control line) lines.  BD both days you get the lines, and two days after.  That should give you plenty of time!

If it gives you any hope, I just got my BFP three days ago, after 6 cycles of Clomid, Provera and Metformin.  It can work!

Good luck Stefanie and let me know how it goes, okay?

Polly :-)
