About Wendy Zwickl Expertise I can answer questions pertaining to infertility including how to administer the injections for IVF, common side effects one may experience, and what to expect during egg retrival. I can answer some questions on IUI and Clomid cycles. I have had unexplained infertility for 6 years and I have been through numerous Clomid cycles with and without IUI. I have been through a fresh IVF and a frozen ET. I have been through a full range of infertility testing at least once, and in many cases, numerous times. I have had to travel to do all this, and I have some helpful information for couples on how to accomplish treatment goals outside of your local area.
Experience I have dealt with almost all aspects of infertility for 6 years.
I have had IVF, FET, IUI, and Clomid cycles. I have been pregnant
once and have had one miscarrieage. I have had almost all
of the standard infertility workup tests, as has my husband.
I have done several injectible cycles, with both European and American
medications and supplies. When problems arose during treatment, I have
performed exhaustive searches on the web only to come up empty-handed.
I eventually found what I needed and felt I should pass along
whatever I could.
Question My husband and me have three older children 19, 17 and almost 15 and we have a baby 4 months who was a twin. We lost the baby boy due to the cord was around his neck. We conceived the twins while on clomid and metformin combo. Clomid days 2-7. It was our second month on that we conceived. All our kids were delivered c-section. We are ready to have another baby now and due to all the c-sections this will be our last pregnancy So we realy want twins The same dr put me on clomid alone without the metformin this time and clomid is days 3-8. We was wondering if the clomid and metformin combo would up are chance for twins and should we do the clomid 2-7 like last time or stick to 3-8. Thank you.
Answer Jamie-
I am not sure that you will be able to get a doctor to deliberatly try for twins. Most RE's consider this unethical--adjusting medication to 'try for twins'. This could be harmful to the mother and could lead to death or birth defects in one or both babies. In infertility circles, a multiple preganacy is normally concidered a failure, since multiples have higher risks of birth defects and ill effects on the mother. If your doctor wants to do days 3-8 and leave off the metformin, my GUESS is that it is to try for a singleton as opposed to multiples. As you well know, from your own experience, a twin preganancy is hard on the mother and there are no guarentees that either twin will live. So the specialists do try very hard to keep the number down.
I would follow your doctors advice as to the days and amounts of meds. There may be other reasons that he is doing it that way. It might have nothing at all to do with a multiple pregnancy.
I strongly urge you to talk with your doctor before making any changes in medications yourself, and before trying to force a twin or higher pregnancy to occur.
Thanks
