Infertility/Fertility - metformin and clomid

Expert: Scott Roseff, MD, FACOG - 1/26/2004

Question
I have pcos and have been on metformin for one year....actually my general md put me on it for high lipids and it successfully brought them down. I now want to have another baby so I am on 50mg of clomid along with my 1500 of met. my cycles are normally 42 days and after my first month on clomid it was 23 days I am having cramps and pelvic pain is all this normal and are these doses normal in conjunction with each other? I really feel my obgyn is not monitoring me properly and we do not have a Dr. in your field in our town I am not even getting blood tests or sonograms to monitor my ovaries. Is it normal for my cycles to shorten like this? with my first pregnancy they had to give me provera to start my periods but I was not taking met then either. If the clomid is making me ovulate does it mean it is on day eight  or nine instead of  later? I should be able to ask my ob all this but I seem to be better informed about pcos than he does so any help would be appreciated
nicole

Answer
Hi Nicole,

It saddens me that you seem to be more informed than you say your doctor is - It's often NOT in anyone's best interest to be place on Clomid without monitoring.

No, it's NOT normal to have 23 day cycles on Clomid.  Demand to be monitored or switch to someone who will monitor you for proper ovulation.  Are you sure you weren't pregnant before taking the Clomid?  One of the many reasons for early bleeding on Clomid is undiagnosed pregnancy.

Sometimes 50 mg of Clomid is the correct dose, and other times it's not.  It's hard for me to say if it's right for YOU from afar.  Can you come here for aggressive monitoring and treatment (in NJ)?
