About Philip Lafeber
Expertise
I have been specialising in knowledge analysis and modelling. I have an interest in the way models of programs, architectures, business processes and the like are properly made and analysed. What`s meant by `properly` depends on the goal you`re trying to achieve. The analysis of this goal and the way it can best be realised is something you might want to ask me about.

Question
•   What are important considerations for an organization to dispose of old computer equipment?  What methods would work best for the organization in which you are working or have worked?
•   Why is it recommended to establish a formal evaluation criterion when considering the purchase of hardware for the organization?  Are any of the criteria from the wireless laptop article applicable to any other types of hardware to be purchased for your organization?

Answer
Hello Sandra,
The answer to the first half of your first question is very simple; computers are world wide valued as machines that have a life span of 3 years. In the financial books, they are written off over a period of 3 years, so they can be made redundant afterwards.
What do you mean with the second half of that question? What type of methods are you talking about? Disposing? Or measuring?

The second question I don't really understand. Hardware purchasing is mostly based on demand; you need a server, so you buy one. You have X employees in your office, so you need Y computers (desktops, laptops, spares, sometimes 2 for heavy users, etc).

Regards,
Philip.
