About Philip Lafeber
Expertise
I have been specialising in knowledge analysis and modelling. I have an interest in the way models of programs, architectures, business processes and the like are properly made and analysed. What`s meant by `properly` depends on the goal you`re trying to achieve. The analysis of this goal and the way it can best be realised is something you might want to ask me about.

Question
i`m not sure if you can help me but i`m looking for information on the history of edi.  specifically what systems or technologies edi has replaced and what opportunities edi has opened up that were not thought of by the pioneers of this system.  (could jit and e-commerce be a development from edi)

thanks

Answer
The best place to start looking for those kind of things is www.whatis.com. EDI can be found here: http://www.whatis.com/WhatIs_Definition_Page/0,4152,213925,00.html

From there, you should have links to a lot of pages discussing EDI. Sadly, the links are dead. Try them later.

My own expertise is indeed directed towards this topic, but I can't tell you much about the history.

E-commerce is something that is not directly comparable to EDI. It is primarily about boosting business using computers on the one hand and expansion onto the web on th eother. EDI is about communication between systems based on a different technology. Therefore the only connection is there where e-commerce must rely on communication between separate systems.

A JIT (Just-in-time) compiler (if this is what you mean by jit) is used in the Java context. Java is a standard that is developed to make cross-platform programming available, and not so much to make cross-platform communication available. There are however developments going on in leading companies to make communication of data between different systems available, using Java among others, but you won't find information about that yet, since it's in a protective state.
