AboutPhilip Lafeber Expertise I have been specialising in knowledge analysis and modelling. I have an interest in the way models of programs, architectures, business processes and the like are properly made and analysed. What`s meant by `properly` depends on the goal you`re trying to achieve. The analysis of this goal and the way it can best be realised is something you might want to ask me about.

I have a question and I'm not too sure if it's related to database but i'm just wondering what is knowledge and what is knowledge management and why are these important to today’s knowledge economy and to IT professionals.
Do you know of an example of where an organization has achieved value from a Knowledge management initiative
I would just like to get an opinion from you to learn more about knowledge.
Thanks again =)
Answer Hello Sue,
There is indeed some relation to databases. But first; knowledge is a field of study on its own. The question you ask begs a 4 year long answer in studies or a lifetime in research. So my answer will be only like a drop on a hot plate.
Knowledge is something that is needed to make a good organisation better. Organisation can be used vert broadly here. Witout the knowledge you have gained at school, what could you do? What would you be worth? Please also compare this with the limited knowledge that a person can gain in an undeveloped country and how that affects their future applicability as a worker.
Knowledge management is a structured approach to gaining, keeping and improving the needed knowledge in an organisation. You can hire learned people, but if they then do nothing with the knowledge, and they leave, you have managed nothing.
Databases are a store to place data. Data can be anything of nominal value; numbers, dates, texts, boolean values (yes/no) and so on. From that data you can make information by applying it to your work. For instance to decide what market to place your product in. Then there is knowledge. That is gained from applying this information in your daily work and learning what the effects are. This can be very tangible in the toughest product that you can produce and the materials that you need to produce it, or very intangible in the way you handle people so that they work together in the best way.
This is just one vision to knowledge and the surrounding areas. There are other visions that approach it much differently. I apporach it in a detached manner, logically and calculatingly. One could also decide to apporach it in a very personal manner.
I hope this is a nice start for you. Please don't stop here because there is much, much more to say about this topic. And most importantly; use this 'knowledge'!
