Question
Hi Pat...I am 53 and in a little dilemma...I love to rollerblade but both my lower legs feel like the bones are loose after and it hurts for a few days. is there any common sense advice that you can give me before I realize that I cannot rollerbalde any more...Thanks...Norman, Canada,Montreal

Answer
Hi Norman,
What you're feeling could be caused by a couple things.

1)  If you're a new skater the muscles just aren't use to the boot    restriction and movement of pushing?

2)  The boots might be snugged up to tight?

3)  Not a proper fitting skate?  To small or to big?

Usually new skaters feel weak in the legs from using muscles that aren't normally used and their shins tend to hurt from the pressure of the stiff boot.  If you think this could be the cause, try loosening the top of the boot and perhaps put some kind of soft pad between the boot and your leg.

Also if you're a new skater, could you be working out to hard and to long?   Skating uses different muscles that walking does so you have to go at it slowly until the muscles build.

If this is not what you're feeling and your not a new skater, then there could be a medical reason for your bones feeling loose.  Do you ever get this feeling from any other type of activity?

Since I'm not a doctor you will have to use your own good judgement and see if you think it's muscles that need to be built or if you think it could actually be a medical problem.

Try loosening the top of the boot and put a soft pad in there and skate gently but only for maybe 15 minutes.  Then take the skates off.  Try this for a week or 2 and see if it makes a difference.  If not, then I would visit a sports doctor to see what is causing the problem.

If you have been wearing your boots loose all along, try snugging them up.

Good Luck......I hope you find the answer to the problem.

Pat
