About Lezly Ziering
Expertise
Ask me technical questions about how to skate, where to skate in N.Y.C., what to look for in a skate, where to learn to skate indoors or outdoors in N.Y.C. Where to buy traditional skates (quads). Do not ask things like - give me a list of skates from the best to the least desireable or prices of inline skates.

Inline Skating and Roller Skating/Blading - slowing my skates down

Expert: Lezly Ziering - 4/20/2007

Question
Hi Lezly,

I just bought some new roller blades with good bearings and abec--much better than my old Target ones.  The problem is they are too good--I don't have as much control because they go too fast.  I have wiped out a couple of times going down hills.  Is there a way to adjust something on the wheels so they don't go so fast?

Answer
Pam,
You say "I just bought some new roller blades with good bearings and abec-" There is a number that follows ABEC, without which I have no idea how your bearings are rated. I would guess they are ABEC 7 or 9 which is most usual for the inline skates sold today. You could have the shop where you bought the skates switch them for ABEC 3 bearings - Such a downgrade, however is my least favorite option.
The best solution is to find a qualified instructor to teach you the techniques (hill turns & controlled descent etc.) to deal with the changing outdoor terrain.
If you are in the New York vicinity, I could be your best option. My outdoor classes would make you secure on hills so that you would not have to think twice about downgrading your hot new skates. I have been teaching both indoor & outdoor classes since 1979. My next outdoor 4 week course begins on May 5th.
You can check out Lezly Skate School on the web at www.SkateGuru.com or you can call 212 777-3232 to register.
I would love to take the anxiety out of your outdoor skating experience.
Roll On!!!..............Lezly (SkateGuru@aol.com)
