Subject: hit car in parking lot/left note/not sure what's next

Question
I hit someone else's parked car in a parking lot 5 days ago and left a note with
my phone number.  No one called me until today, 5 days later.  I haven't called
my insurance yet (not sure I want my rates to go up).  Must I call my insurance
even if I will cover damages myself?  What should I do next?

Answer
Hi Sally,
You should immediately contact the owner of the other car and tell
him/her that you are considering paying the claim out of your own pocket instead of involving your insurance company and ask the owner to secure three estimates and call you back.
At that time, you can offer to pay based on the lowest estimate if you feel that the amount is less than any increase in your insurance would be, otherwise, call your insurance company and report the accident.
If you should decide to pay the damage 'out of pocket', be sure to get a signed and witnessed 'Release of all Claims' from the owner of the car.

I hope this information is of help.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Bennie
San Francisco Bay Area
