Question
Hi

i am 19 years old still on my GDL program.  i was involved in an accident when we were both parked at a light, fully stopped for a few seconds and i pressed the gas instead of the brake.

i hit her suv.  minor minor damage on my car and the same with hers except her bumper is alittle out of place.

My question:
how much do you think the bumper would cost if she had to replace the whole thing?  And how much would my insurance go up?  alsowhat is the process the insurance company goes through when dealing with an incident like this?

Answer
Hi Colin, there are too many variables here to give very definitive answers.  The make, model and year of the SUV for one, and the particular insurance company which insured the vehicle you were operating for another.  Some companies offer a freebie on the first accident and many do not.  The more the damages to the SUV cost, the more your insurance will go up.  In general when both insurance companies are given all of the details of the accident they work out the details as far as payment for the repairs without any involvement on the part of the drivers.  The liability for the accident is 100% yours so you can expect an increase in your premiums in a matter such as this.
