Insurance Law - insurance on stolen car

Expert: Denise - 11/2/2009

Question
My car was stolen from my work parking lot in Detroit MI. I had PLPD on the car since it was paid off. I had no choice but to buy another car 3 days later. I make a report with the hospital where it was stolen and also made a report to the Detroit police the same day. I never reported the theft to my insurance company since I was not making a claim. i had the insurance transferred to my new car. approx 20 days later my stolen car was involved in an accident and now AAA is trying to make me pay for 13000 dollars in damage to the car that was hit. Am I responsible for keeping insurance on a car that was stolen?

Answer
Hi Irene-
No, you don't have to keep insuring a car that was stolen.  Advise AAA that the vehicle was stolen from your place of employment, and reported to the police department 20 days before the accident.  They can contact the police to confirm that, and your employer as well.  I don't know if there is anything else that you could have done, but I'm not from Michigan.  Hope this helps. :) Denise
