Question I'm thinking about taking electronics to Brazil and selling to personal friends and family but I know you can only take $500 dollars worth. My question is: What goes into these $500 dollars, personal belongs or what? And what would happen if I get caught taking electronics well over the limit?
hope to hear from you soon, thank you very much
Answer Hello Bruno:
Yes, the $500 allowance is for personal belongings. If you have a non-Brazilian passport (and are visiting Brazil), customs is generally more lenient and allows entry of personal items such as cameras, laptop computers, etc., as long as they are not obviously for sale. For instance, I have heard of cases when the agent asks the visitor to turn the laptop on and show actual programs used.
I believe that over-the-limit duty is 100% of value that exceeds $500.
These answers are my personal opinions, I suggest you visit the website of the "Receita Federal", you should be able to find info about the legislation and how it is enforced.
