Answer
Jackie:

Studies like you are asking for (to the best of my knowledge) don't exist -- they would be extremely costly to compile all data from all countries and make any sense out of it.  In other words, if such a study existed, you would have to pay millions of dollars to just look at it (because it would be such valueable information).

As a company, this would be too much information anyway -- unless you are a lot bigger than I guess, you can't be involved with so many markets and still be effective. If you are in the process of starting an export business, you have to focus on key markets that make sense for YOU.

In other words, if you live in a region or country that is good at producing shoes (for instance), and some of those shoe companies aren't exporting to Europe (for instance), then maybe it makes sense to specialize in exporting shoes to Europe (since it's a niche that nobody else is dominant in).

If you are starting an "export" company, you have to decide what part of the export value chain you want to be part of -- do you want to "represent" some local or regional manufacturers that aren't currently exporting (or that you can do a better job exporting than they are currently doing); do you want to be an "export service" where you just handle export/import documentation (a customs broker); do you want to warehouse goods that are waiting to be exported (a "third party logistics" provider); or do you want to help individuals that are already IN the export markets find a source for products that they are already demanding (in other words, be a "sourcing agent" that connects people looking for products with manufacturers that can make those products).

So...getting back to your original, "big" broad question -- such data is probably not easily available (or affordable).  Every REGION (like a Country, or a State) will typically have a World Trade Center or a government agency that is promoting exports for their specific region.  Once you decide what part of the export value chain you want to be part of, then you have to consider what geography you want to focus on, then you can figure out (from government or trade groups) what types of supplies or demand exists for various products in those region.

Our company does market studies in Mexico, Central America, and the US-Mexico border region.  We charge clients anywhere from $5,000-$30,000 for most market studies -- and these are usually focused just on one type of product.  That's why I say that finding one study that outlines "all or most" types of products current in demand in markets probably isn't available.

Again, you can do your own digging into Census data or industry data, but each source probably only covers a region or country, and will likely focus on general consumer or industry product categories....

Good luck with your business,

Kenn Morris
