Question Hello Glenn, I have a 4 year degree in business and am a U.S. Citizen. I would like to know what credentials are required to work in the EU (UK). Specifically in the field of Human Resources. Is there a particular area of this field that has an overseas demand? Are there specific companies and/or industries that have this opportunity?
From my research, it is next to impossible for a U.S. Citizen to obtain a work permit in the EU unless they are directly related to an EU citizen or possess a highly specialized skill.
Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Thank you
Answer Dear Diane, hello to you and thanks for the question.
You have researched correctly: as a non-EU citizen it is not easily possible to work in the EU. Just as working in teh US requires a work-permit for non-citizens or residents, so does it in the EU.
Unless an international firm hires you and makes the case that no qualified local person can do the job, your chances are very slim I think.
You may wish to explore working with international organizations in HR, i.e. development and relief NGOs.
If you need advice in that area, I am specialized in looking for current openings among NGOs. This is a service I provide for a basic fee.
Let me know if you are intersted.
Thanks and best regards,
