International Jobs - International writing/teaching/serving opportunities
Expert: Glenn Brigaldino - 9/4/2002
Question Greetings! I am not quite sure if I have contacted the correct person, but I hope you will be able to help me. I find myself in quite a quandary, and am in desperate need of advisement and counsel. I am an English BA graduate of Oklahoma State University. I am currently employed at Claflin University as an editor, grant writer, and a lab manager. I intended to gain professional experience as an editor here at Claflin University, then return to OSU and earn my master's degree in TESL. However, due to constrained finances and the lack of time, it has become increasingly apparent that graduate school would not be in my best interest. I do so want to have a career before I am married and have a family. Therefore, I have decided to pursue my career at the present time.
I would like to pursue a job overseas, preferably in Africa, involving either the teaching of English, writing/editing for an international company, or if nothing else in working with the impoverished or disabled…some type of social service program. I will not be able to support myself on the small amount of savings I have incurred and will need to be paid only for living expenses (food, shelter, transportation, etc.); in other words, I will unfortunately be unable to participate in a volunteer program. I have considered such organizations as the Peace Corps., etc., but prefer to be independently considered instead of associated with a particular type of American “charity” organization. My knowledge of such jobs is obviously limited. For this reason, I need your help in directing my search of such an occupation.
I have traveled to Spain and Morocco, Mexico, and Thailand for internship programs. I have a limited, but feasible knowledge of the Spanish language and can communicate on a fair level. My experience with children and young adults is extremely broad, but I do prefer to work with adults if possible. Please respond and direct my search to organizations, etc., that could possibly use a person with a bachelor's in English!
Thank you for your consideration and time. Your response is greatly needed and appreciated!
Thank you,
April Adams
