Question
Hi Dave,

My question is more of a technical nature so I hope you can help.  I live in a rural area that has no cable access so I am forced to use a dial-up modem.  My connection speed is so slow sometimes I can't even get connected.  It varies between 14,000 bps to around 21,000 bps most of the time.  I do have Direct TV but the prices for satellite hookup is more than I can afford, plus they tell me there is a limit to how much you can download in a 24 hour period, like if you enjoy watching YouTube videos. Right now downloading anything at all is hopeless.

I have friends with laptops that use what they tell me is an "air card" and a "router" that enables them internet access.  Since I only have a DeskTop and not a LapTop I was wondering if that same technology can be applied on my computer?  None of my friends seem to know, but with no other options available I was wondering if this would work.  What is your opinion?

Thanks,
Gary

Answer
The "air card" is known as wi-fi network interface card (NIC) and the router is a device which extends the internet signals on wireless path to a laptop or desktop. You will be able to use these devices only if you have an internet connection of sufficient speed (broadband, cable or optical fiber are the ones best suited for this)
