Internet for Beginners - Broadband Internet in New Caney Texas

Expert: Scottgem - 8/16/2005

Question
I was wondering if you may have any ideas on how to get broadband internet access, cable or DSL, in New Caney, Texas.

Thank you,
Landon

Answer
You need to check your local carriers. Who provides Cable TV for the area? Who are the Telco carriers? They are the ones to contact.

Saw your comment. You say "unable to help you". What does that mean? Do they not provide service in your area? Did they not know what you were talking about? What?

I googled New Caney and came up with some info at areaguides.net. It does list RoadRunner and Cox as providing business services and Covad for DSL. it also lists a TDH for Satellite access. But that may be pulling Houston listings. Checking the map New Caney appears close enough to Houston that it might not be considered very rural. But not knowing the area I can't tell.

Cable broadband is provided over the same wires that carry cable TV. To provide cable Internet, the cable carrier needs to have setup local nodes to extend the signal into your neighborhood. If your cable carrier has not done this, then ask them whether they have plans for doing it. It would surprise me if they weren't planning on it.

For DSL, you need to be close enough to a Telco Central office. If you are, they may be several carriers for you.

The key though is either your cable TV carrier or your Telco should be able to tell you is A) broadband service is currently available or B) if there are plans for availability.
