Internet for Beginners/Naming

Question
I am not a beginner. Yet what is bothering me is that why some websites are prefixed by "www" and some are not. Does the organisation WWW play any role here?

Answer
naja naja-

The prefix depends mostly on the location of the site.  For some more secure sites, like a university website, it would be ww2 as opposed to www.  Also, some sites have subdomains.  For instance, my website is http://www.jwmagic.com but for some special things I could have http://forms.jwmagic.com  Ebay also uses http://somethingelse.ebay.com and replace the "somethingelse" with whatever it actually is.  Does this make any sense?

If that made no sense at or or you have any other questions for me, please don't hesitate to contact me at any time with more questions.  Thanks!  :-)
