Question Hi Scottgem, I have a question that may not be in your field of expertise - but I'm giving it a try anyway. Can you tell me the meaning of the terms, "hits, visits, files, and pages". (I have a website and my server gives me numbers for all of those terms - but I have no idea what they mean.)Most people seem to brag about how many "Hits" they get, but I'm not sure exactly what "hits" (or those other terms) mean Thanks very much.
If you'd prefer to contact me directly, my email is joelspeaks@aol.com.
Thanks again. Joel
Answer A Hit generally means someone entered your URL into a browser. Visits usually mean the same thing, but it could mean that a person viewed multiple pages where a hit might be for each specific page. Pages refer to each HTML (or browseable) file on your site. A site might have thousands of pages or just one. HTML is not the only type of page a browser will open, ASP, PHP CGI and other code types might also constiutute a page. Each Html page is a file. In addition there may be support files like images etc.
You might want to ask your website host for their specific meanings for the terms.
