Internet for Beginners - my own website

Expert: Scottgem - 9/22/2004

Question
How do you go about putting your own website on the internet?  Is it free?  Once you've done it, will a google search that someone does for one of the words on your website bring up your website as one of the items found in a google search?  Can you edit it easily whenever you want to?

Thanks,

Answer
There are several options for putting up a WEB site. There are places, like geocities.com where you can put up a site for free. The drawback is that the site will include ads put on it by geocities. Your ISP may provide some WEB space for free, usually enough to put up a small page. For example, AOL provides 2M of free space for each screen name, 7M if you are willing to accept ads on your site.

But these are used primarly for personal sites. If you want a business site you should go with a WEB host service. Such services can range from About $10/mth on up depending on the services offered. To use such space, you will usually need to register a domain name first. I would check out GoDaddy.com for registration and host services.

Maintaining your page can be easy or hard depnding on the page. A relatively plain text page, can be easy to maintain. You should learn some HTML which isn't hard.

As for getting on the search engines, most search engines will accept submissions, but they all regular send out "bots" to catalog the WEB. Eventually your pages will be listed, but probably not in the first few pages, unless your keywords are very unique.

Hope this helps,
Scott<>
