Internet for Beginners - why sometimes www and sometimes not

Expert: Scottgem - 10/19/2004

Question
excuse me for my bad english.

i want to know why there are websites for examples www.hotmail.com that start with www and there are others that donīt have this prefix.

thanks for your collaboration

Answer
Originally, the www was a suggested prefix by the Web standards body to indicate the address was a web server. As time as past its been felt that its not necessary and could be dropped. However, it depends on how a site registers itself. The way the Domain naming system works, there are servers all over the Net that take the text address and translates it into an IP address which is the actual address of the WEB server. To all for a different naming, the domain holder has to pay for extra entries in the Domain naming system.

Hope this helps,
Scott<>
