Answer
There are a few kid friendly sites out there that you can explore.

Neopets is an online virtual pet site where users can create and take care of up to four virtual pets, buying them food, toys and other accessories. You can play mini-games, chat on forums etc.
http://www.neopets.com

Horseland is an online community where you can raise horses and dogs. Begun in 1994 by a 14 year old girl in the United States, Horseland has now grown to have more than 4 million users who play from all over the world. Most of the players are girls from age 10 to 22

Nick.com is the official website for the US children's television channel, Nickelodeon. Nick.com also has a section called Nicktropolis that is a kid safe and friendly chat.

There are a host of other online games that are similar to Runescape like Maple Story, Furcadia etc. but most have very little in the way of monitoring so while they can be entertaining they can also be more hazardous to navigate.
